Preservation services

The National Archives provides specialised services for preserving and exhibiting archival documents. 

These services are available to all government and non-government clients, including cultural institutions and individuals.

The fees on this page are in Australian dollars. Clients outside Australia will be charged the GST-exclusive price.

Professional training and equipment

National Archives staff can help you use our specialist equipment for preservation work.

Our staff can also provide tailored training at your premises. Other professional services are provided on request.

All National Archives staff have professional training in preservation practices to ensure paper, photographic, digital or audiovisual records remain accessible and usable over time.

Fees

Professional training (offsite)

These fees are per hour for a single presenter. Maximum 10 people per session.

  • Cost including GST: $187.00
  • Cost excluding GST: $170.00

Assisted use of specialist equipment

These fees are per hour.

  • Cost including GST: $184.90
  • Cost excluding GST: $168.09

Loans for exhibitions

The National Archives regularly loans records to other institutions for exhibitions.

As part of this service, we perform the following activities:

  • site visits to inspect the venue
  • condition assessment and reporting
  • item preparation
  • installation and de-installation
  • administration

Fees

Activities associated with the loan of items for exhibitions

These fees are per hour.

  • Cost including GST: $149.40
  • Cost excluding GST: $135.82

Activities associated with the urgent loan of items for exhibitions

These fees are per hour and apply when we receive less than 6 months’ notice.

  • Cost including GST: $203.70
  • Cost excluding GST: $185.18

Exhibition material

Please contact the Agency Service Centre for a quote on materials used for packaging, transporting and displaying loan items.

Materials testing

National Archives of Australia has suspended its Material Testing Service until the end of 2024.
